Summer Scamper is an annual race that benefits Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford and the child health programs at Stanford University School of Medicine. It features a 5k, 10k, kids' fun run, and Family Festival. Since its debut, in 2011, Summer Scamper has grown into a community-wide event that draws more than 3,200 Scamper-ers! Together, we have raised more than $1.5 million for children's health.
About our Summer Scamper cover girl, Melina:
Melina, pictured on the Scamper home page at 9 months old, is as strong as they come. Within her first year of life, she was diagnosed with Double Outlet Right Ventricle, a serious heart condition that required multiple surgeries to fix. At 5 months old, she contracted pneumonia and one of her lungs collapsed, keeping her in our cardiovascular intensive care unit for months.
“There were days we couldn’t imagine any other life than in the hospital,” recalls Melina’s mom, Erica. “We had scary times, but the doctors and nurses took great care of her and always made us feel comfortable to ask any questions.”
Things were looking up, and Melina was allowed to return home to Hamilton City, north of Chico. But less than two weeks later she was rushed back to our hospital because of an aneurysm that caused bleeding in Melina’s brain. “Packard Children’s saved her life not once, but a few times, and for that we are forever grateful,” says Erica. “Now we are home and our little miracle is thriving. Packard Children’s might be far from home but we are more than happy we were able to have her treated at such a great hospital.”
Erica also wants to thank you. Without donors like you who support our hospital, her family wouldn’t have a bright future with their happy, dancing “Melina Ballerina.”
